In 1989, the present land occupied by St Mary’s Community Centre was being sought in order that a hall, a Church and, if necessary a school, could be built. The initial project was the hall, called a Community Centre, that would be used as a Church – in the interim – until a Church could be built.
In the seventies, the only Catholic Church existent in the district on Glenfallon Rd was sold, in addition to the land, to raise revenue to build the present Church in Lavington. The Catholic communities of Jindera and Gerogery, at the time, were assured of a new Church in the future.
The original Church, a simple weatherboard contruction on the Walla Walla Rd, once sold became the present ‘Dollhouse Museum’ in Gerogery West. It remains there today as a constant and painful reminder of what once was a local Catholic Church.
In 2009 the Catholic Parish of Lavington sought permission from the Bishop of Wagga Wagga to build a neo Gothic Church. The Catholic community rallied behind the project and with much effort and hard work the dream became a reality. So on Sunday the 6th February 2011 at a Solemn Mass the Most Reverend Gerard Hanna of Wagga Wagga blessed and opened Saint Mary’s Church.
